Is Pet Insurance Good Value?

As the owner of a Ferrari, you would no doubt be very concerned that your investment in such a valuable and desirable commodity should be properly protected. You would worry that other, less fortunate car owners may desire to own your car so much that they might take the opportunity to drive away with it in the middle of the night. Or, you could be involved in a road accident leaving you as the owner of a non-driveable, non-desirable pile of scrap metal.

Given all these potential risks to your beautiful motor it’s conceivable that you’d be more than willing to shell out a couple of thousand pounds a year for the peace of mind and knowledge that should anything go wrong with said Ferrari, you, at least, would not have to suffer a huge financial loss either by having replace or repair a damaged or stolen car. Having said all that, imagine, if you will, the size of bill you’d be responsible for should you drive your mean machine into the back of limousine carrying a national dignitary causing him or her to spend the rest of their days in a wheelchair, requiring 24 hour medical care or at worse - death.

The lawyer’s for the injured party would be hunting you down for millions. Again you should be O.K. though as your two thousand pounds a year insurance policy gets you out of another jam. You’re so glad you’ve go that policy now aren’t you.

It seems a very great pity that 82% of the U.K’s pet owning population doesn’t think along the same lines. It is a, quite frankly, astonishing fact that only 12% of pets in Britain are covered by an insurance policy of any kind given the fact that vet fees are constantly on the rise, 40% of the entire cost of owning a pet is spent on unforeseen medical treatment and 50% of the U.K’s pets require extensive veterinary surgery at some point in their lives with one in three pets requiring it before the age of two. This translates to approximately £4,000 having to be spent by every British pet owner on medical fees alone. The average cost of a pet insurance policy is around £2,100 for the whole of its life and covers a great deal more than medical bills alone.

Unlike the Ferrari owner, pets are not legally obliged to be covered by an insurance policy of any kind. However, just like the majority of car owners in the U.K. our pets are equally as capable of causing injury, being injured, causing death, being killed, going missing, being stolen, destroying valuable property and a whole lot worse!
